WASHINGTON (AP) – President Joe Biden on Friday put an end to the “National Garden of American Heroes” planned by his predecessor and canceled the previous President Donald TrumpRussian decrees aimed at moderating social media companies and promoting US foreign aid.
By his own order, Biden has abolished the Trump-formed working group to create a new monument proposed by the former president last year.
It was to feature sculptures from dozens of American historic figures, including presidents, athletes and pop culture icons, which Trump envisioned as “a huge outdoor park that will feature statues of the greatest Americans who ever lived.”
Trump himself oversaw the list of those to be included – Davy Crockett, Billy Graham, Whitney Houston, Harriet Tubman, and Antonin Scalia, among others – but no seat was chosen, and the garden was never funded by Congress.
Biden’s order also overturned Trump’s May 2020 ruling urging the Justice Department and the FTC to investigate social media companies for tagging or deleting messages or entire accounts in what Trump claims is a restriction on free speech. The order was issued before Trump was removed from platforms such as Twitter and Facebook following the January 6 Capitol uprising.
The president also canceled Trump’s December 2020 order to brand all US foreign aid with a single “logo that embodies the values and generosity of the American people.”
It also reversed Trump’s June 2020 order, which called for the federal government to “prosecute to the maximum extent permitted by federal law” vandalism and destruction of federal-owned monuments. The order came in response to the defacement of statues – especially Confederate statues – during nationwide protests against racial injustice following the assassination of George Floyd while in police custody.
Biden also targeted Trump’s proclamation, which required immigrants to prove they would be covered by certain health insurance plans within 30 days of entering the United States, or to prove they could cover medical expenses.
“My administration is committed to expanding access to quality, affordable health care,” Biden said, reversing the announcement. “However, we can achieve this goal without prohibiting entry of non-citizens who seek to immigrate legally to this country, but do not have significant financial resources or have not purchased health insurance from a limited list of eligible plans.”
