Daimler Buses and its service brand Omniplus have set up a mobile printing center for the decentralized production of 3D printed parts so that they can provide bus parts faster to bus customers. The “mini-factory” in the form of a container includes all stations related to the production of spare parts on a 3D printer. The container can be transported by road to any place. Once there, it only requires electricity and an internet connection to work.

Daimler Buses is the first supplier to provide quality in batch production with a mobile solution.
The pilot container from Neu-Ulm will be operated at the BusWorld Home (BWH) service center in Hamburg. Thus, Daimler Buses is setting up an additional manufacturing facility for 3D printing of spare parts at BWH Hamburg – in addition to an in-house 3D printing industrial center for parts production in Neu-Ulm.

The 3D parts are manufactured additively using high quality polyamide and meet the manufacturing standards for injection molded and deep drawn parts set by Daimler AG.
3D printing data is prepared in a CAD workstation prior to the printing process. The required powder is prepared in the processing station, where the printed spare part is also released from the residual powder in the final stage. The sandblasting machine and the air compressor are located in an adjacent room: the blasting system smoothes the surface of the parts for a perfect finish. Here, the printed spare parts can also be dyed in limited colors. The compressor supplies the systems with compressed air. Also, the container is equipped with an industrial vacuum cleaner, an air filter and an air conditioning system.

By using 3D printing, Daimler Buses can respond quickly and flexibly to urgent customer requirements, such as when customers order rarely needed parts or have special requests. Instead of waiting for weeks like regular spare parts, it only takes a few days to manufacture and deliver a 3D printed part. Today, just under 40,000 bus parts can be 3D printed.
