Arjan Bhullar became the first Indian-born fighter to win a world title in the top-tier MMA promotion when he defeated Brandon Vera to become the World Heavyweight Champion at the One Championship in Singapore.
Defeating Vera, Bhullar completed the Philippine American’s five-year championship race.
Bhullar completely dominated the second round of the fight. “For the first time in my entire career, I felt gassed in the first round,” Vera said in a post-match interview. “I am fit, we trained, we worked with the best people in the world. This is new to me. “
A former wrestler, Bhullar won the gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, and in 2012 in London, he became the first Indian-born freestyle wrestler to represent Canada at the Olympics.
Following his wrestling career, when he won his UFC debut against Luis Enrigue Barbosa de Oliveira at UFC 215, he became the first Indian-born fighter to win a fight in the UFC.
